This Library is all about cold! The temperatures of these files range from a low of −20°F up to a balmy 35°F. Our Rabbit Ears froze so your ears would not have to.

Winter Atmospheres was culled from some of the coldest forests and wilderness areas in North America. Our frozen locations include: Nemadji State Forest and Superior National Forest in Minnesota, Crex Meadows Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin, and Algonquin Park in Canada.

Before purchasing, please take the time to look at our license agreement. The sounds are royalty free and licensed to you, which means there are some restrictions, so please read it carefully. REA_012 Winter Atmospheres $115

This library is Rabbit Ears Audio’s first quad (L/R/Ls/Rs) ambience collection. We dragged, hiked, skied, and snowshoed a double ORTF rig into the woods. The collection features airs, winds, tree creaks, ice cracks, and even a few winter birds. Each ambience is between two and nine minutes long, with interesting variations.

The double ORTF rig consists of 4 Schoeps CMC5 bodies with MK4 capsules. The ambiences were tracked to a Sound Devices 744T with Cooper CS–104 front end. The pre-amps on the Cooper were ideal for recording quiet ambiences.

This library could not have been made without additional recording and help from Rob Byers and John Loranger. I’m grateful for their ears, four wheel drive vehicles, and willingness to freeze to death.

REA011 Jet Turbines

Raw power and thrust is what REA_011 Jet Turbines is all about. We sought out a series of hard-to-find and unique sounding turbines. We stood dangerously close to afterburners and jet wash so you wouldn’t have to. The collection includes the L39 Albatros (Soviet-era Mig Trainer), home-built Jet Motorcycle, home-built Jet Utility Cart, and several radio-controlled model jet airplanes. Did I mention the Jet Utility Cart? The L39 was not air worthy, but its turbine was pushed at various levels of thrust on the tarmac. The Jet Motorcycle, Jet Utility Cart, and radio-controlled planes were all pushed during stationary runs and fly bys. This library is a diverse collection of thrusters ready for space travel, other-worldly bys, whines, and low-end raw power ready to be stretched into drones and other design elements.

REA010 Hind Helicopter

One Soviet-era helicopter, four recordists, and plenty of fuel brings you REA_010 Hind. The Mi-24 Hind is a Soviet gunship that was introduced in 1969 and saw action in Afghanistan and throughout the Cold War. I had the opportunity to record the Hind and assembled a team of recordists to get ‘er done.

Sometimes when an opportunity presents itself, you just have to jump at it. This an animal of a helicopter that requires 26,000 lbs of thrust to get off the ground and pushes a ton of air. The helicopter’s large size and five blades give it a unique sound that is a combination of a “chirpy” whine and extreme low end.

This collection features a series of pass-bys and maneuvers from a number of perspectives, as well as onboard recordings from the crew compartment of the aircraft. This library also offers meticulous recordings of all the switches and the electrical system of the aircraft. The internal workings of the machine are full of character and, at times, sound downright possessed.

This library could not have come together without the generous collaboration of the following recordists: Rob Byers, Kelly Pieklo, and John Loranger.

REA009 Antique Engines

REA_009 is a collection of stationary antique engines (both steam and gas) that were used for DC power generation. At the turn of the century before electricity was widely available, these engines were used to provide energy to water plants, factories, farms, and just about anything that needed power. These contraptions are a gold mine of mechanical sounds: steam chuffs, exhaust puffs, whirrs, whines, and bangs.

Antique Engines features over 11 machines from the turn of the century that will fill all of your gas and steam powered needs. Many of the larger engines were recorded with at least 4 channels so different parts of the engines can be emphasized to taste.

The Engines were recorded with the following pieces of gear: Sennheiser MKH30/40, Sennheiser MKH 60, Schoeps MK4/MK8, Sanken CUB-01, Cooper CS-104, Sound Devices 744T.

REA_008 Animal Bells

REA_008 is a collection of sounds meant to be grazed on, but be careful you might alert others you are near! This library features 16 Animal Bells made out of a variety of materials. The materials include, brass, bronze, common metals, wood, animal horns, and even some gourds. So just imagine: ding, clank, ring, twack, rattle, clunk, click, and who doesn’t love gourds?

This library is also a collaboration with Toronto based sound editor, John Loranger. John got in touch when he had a need for some animal bells and heard about a unique private collection in the states. After we both saw the collection, we knew it was worthy of a thorough session.

The bells in the collection were originally designed for cow, goats, sheep, elephants, and possibly a cat or two. There is a even a Buddhist bell tossed in because it just sounds so good.

Each bell was recorded from multiple perspectives with Schoeps and Sennheiser MKH microphones. It was tracked on a Sound Devices 744T with a Cooper CS-104 as a front end. We like those Cooper mic pres.

REA007 Brooks Streams Waterfalls

REA 007 is a celebration of moving water in nature. From small trickles to rushing torrents, Brooks Streams Waterfalls is for those who need a variety of water movement in their library.

Locations were chosen based on their variety of elements. Water sounds most unique when it has something to pass through that changes its flow. The brooks and streams in this collection feature currents that are shaped by rocks, boulders, and downed trees. The waterfalls chosen range from small falls fed by babbling mountain brooks to large rushing waterfalls fed by strong relentless currents.

This collection of sounds features 45 files that clock in at 68 minutes. It was tracked on a Sound Devices 744T with a Cooper CS-104 as the front end. Both Schoeps (MK4/MK8) and Sennheiser MKH (30/40) Mid-Side pairs were used. The Schoeps were the “go to” pair, but the MKH’s got a workout as well. Only one human back was slightly damaged during a river crossing and one Rycote back-cap was lost to a waterfall.

REA006 Bells

bell: |bel| noun a hollow object, typically made of metal and having the shape of a deep inverted cup widening at the lip, that sounds a clear musical note when struck, typically by means of a clapper inside.

Bronze, brass, chrome, gold, stainless steel, and steel are just some of the materials that forged this library. We spent a day at one of the few remaining bell foundries in the United States and we rang bells until our ears nearly fell off. We hit them with mallets, clappers, and shook them with our bare hands. We also spent time on an old barge and percussion rental facility for rare and unusual bells.

Each bell was recorded from multiple perspectives . . . if you need a heavy attack or just a warm roomy bell toll . . . we’ve got it.

5 Tanks, 2 Armored Personnel Carriers, 3 Days, and 1 Military Library! Military Vehicles is a collaboration between Rabbit Ears Audio and Rob Nokes of Sounddogs.com. Over the course of 3 Days we recorded almost non-stop with the help of The Fort Snelling Military Museum in Minnesota. They were kind enough to open their doors and their tanks to us.

All of the onboard recordings are multichannel mono files and the exteriors are un-matrixed mid-side recordings. REA004 Metal Machines

Shake, Rattle, and Rumble. Those are just a few of the sounds that heavy machinery makes when it is fired up and put into action. The age of the steam locomotive has long faded in the United States, but the tools used to maintain them, rebuild them, and fabricate new parts are very much alive.

I visited a shop whose primary focus is repairing old steam locomotives and building replicas for use around the country (Thomas The Tank Engine is big business). This library features 11 pre-1950s tools that will get your motor running and add texture to your mechanized needs. I hired a machinist to perform the following mechanical masterpieces of the industrial age: Wheel Lathe, Metal Planer, McCabe Metal Flanger, Metal Shaper, Summit Engine Lathe, Summit Engine Rapid Traverse, Hendy Engine Lathe, Vertical Turret Lathe, Bridgeport Milling Machine, Large Air Needle Scaler, Small Air Needle Scaler.

All of the machines have such wonderful qualities that smooth computer-controlled contemporary machines don’t possess. Metal Machines is here to bring on the flap, whirr, grind and whine that your work needs.

One of the highlights for me was this 1910 Wheel Lathe, which is one of two wheel lathes still in operation in the United States.

REA003 Hydrophonic

Time to get wet and be sucked in by the rip current! Hydrophonic is a moist library that features sounds recorded from a variety of subaquatic perspectives. For a period of 3 months, I dragged around my hydrophones wherever I could find water. My hydrophones went with me to waterfalls, streams, lakes, rivers, oceans, swimming pools, scuba divers, and even the local bathtub.

The highlights of the library are the waterfalls and the various recordings of water movement. I used several Aquarian H2A Hydrophones throughout the recording process and recorded most currents of water from a variety of perspectives. In addition to water movement and ambience, the library features sounds from swim and scuba moves. If oxygen tanks are your thing, then you are in the right place (Do you like bubbles?).

And finally, I took a few props underwater for some fun design elements. It’s amazing what deodorant sprays and steam cleaners sound like when submerged.
